    PAGE LAYOUT, whether it is an advertisement, flyer or newsletter determines the effectiveness of the page on comprehension. If a document is too cluttered or appears unorganized the viewer may be confused when reading. However, if a document is well organized and clear, the viewer will have little difficulty in reading and understanding the material. As outlined in "The Non-Designers Design Book," there are four main principles to remember when designing: proximity, alignment, repitition, and contrast.

    • Proximity

                               

    Group related items together. Items that are not related should not be near to the other elements; this gives an instant visual clue to the organization of the document.

    • Alignment

                                           

    Nothing should be placed randomly on a page. When items are aligned it appears more cohesive and there is an invisible line which connects them both in the viewers mind and eye.

    • Repitition

                                          

    Repeat some aspect of the design in the piece. For example; bold font, thin or heavy line, color etc.. This is also known as consistency which is used to unify and strengthen a document.

    • Contrast

    Contrast is the most effective way to add visual interest to your document. The purpose is to make the viewer want to look at the page. To be effective, the page must be strong. Contrast happens when two elements are different. For example; large with small font, a thin line with a think line, cool colors with warm colors.
