    A conversation between two friends

Victoria: Hey, Jerry! How are you doing?
    Jerry: Very good, and you?

    Victoria: I’m good, too.
Jerry: I heard that you’re going to study abroad. Are you leaving soon?

Victoria: Yeah, in a few weeks. You’ve been to America before. Could you give me some advice about how to behave there properly?
Jerry: Sure. Americans greet each other by simply using “Hi/Hello!” “How are you?”or “Good morning/afternoon/evening!”. Sometimes they talk about weather, too. This is very different from us, right?

Victoria: Yep. We Chinese would often ask “Have you had your dinner?” when they meet others.
Jerry: That may sound strange to Americans. They’ll think you’re inviting him/her to dinner! Ha-ha.

Victoria: Oh, I’ll remember that. What else?
Jerry: The way they call each other is also quite different. Mr. or Miss is also used of course. But usually they prefer to call others by their first name, not only to peers, but also to the eldership.

Victoria: Wow! That IS different! Thank you very much, Jerry.
    Jerry: You’re welcome.
