Tian'anmen Square occupies an area of 49 hectares , big enough to hold half a million people. The square has witnessed（目睹） the Chinese people's struggle against foreign aggression（侵略） and reactionary rule（反动统治） at home. 
  In 1919, the May 4th Movement broke out in Beijing. Students and residents staged a patriotic（爱国的） demonstration（游行示威） in the square. In 1935, students in Beijing launched（发动） the December 9th Movement against the Japanese aggression.On April 5, 1976, lots of people gathered here to commemorate（纪念） Zhou Enlai and oppose（反对） the "Gang of Four".
