There are now no more than 4,500 Indian tigers in the wild. The World Wildlife Fund (the WWF, now referred as the World Wide Fund for Nature) helped the Indian government develop Project Tiger in 1973. It included setting up nine tiger reserves. The project helped to save the tiger. The WWF has also helped protect Indian tigers in Bangladesh and Nepal. With nearly 3.15 meters from its nose to the tip of its tail, the Siberian tiger is the world's largest cat. There are only 200 in the world, most of them in Russia. Illegal killing has increased greatly in the last seven years because tiger products can make a lot of money for those hunters. The bones and other body parts are used for traditional medicines. Illegal killing and trading are continuing, and tigers are in danger. Governments have made some laws to protect tigers. But there's still a long way to go.Tigers in Danger
