Interviewer: We know that lots of animals are in danger all over the world. But just how many are left of some of the most well known species, like pandas, lions, and elephants? We asked a wildlife journalist and photographer, Dr Martin Strong, to tell us the bad news.

Dr Martin Strong: Well, yes, it is bad news I'm afraid. One of the best loved animals in the world is the panda, and there are probably only about 1,000 left in reserves in China. Another 60 or so live in zoos.
In Africa there are maybe 21,000 lions, which is not good, but much better than Asian tigers. There are probably only 2,000 Bengal tigers, and on the border between Russia and China as few as 200 Siberian tigers.
Then there are species which live a long way from people, like the polar bears, for example, whose traditional home is the Arctic, and their numbers are falling, too. Today there are between 22 and 27 thousand of these animals left.
There are some species which we know are in danger, but it is difficult to give a number for. Sea turtles are an example of this. The sea turtle is one of the oldest animals on earth—there were turtles at least 150 million years ago—but today their future is in danger, as it is for so many other animals.
