Western Manners (礼节): It is a great help for the person who is learning (学习) a foreign (外国的) language (语言) to know some customs (习俗) and manners for the people who speaks it, because the language is very closely associated (有关系的,发声联系的) with them. I will tell you some common (正常的) western manners.

    1) Greeting (打招呼).

The simplest (最简单的) thing to say is "Good morning," "Good afternoon'" or "Good evening." This greeting is given to one whom you know only slightly (轻微的), or to any one you are passing (经过) quickly. "How are you" is usually used when you are not in such a hurry (匆忙,急).No answer is expected (期望) other than “Fine, thank you." "Hello” is the commonest form (形式) of greeting between good friends.

    2) When to Shake (摇动) Hands .

It is customary ( 惯常的 ) to shake hands when you first meet someone. And usually friends shake hands when they meet after not having seen each other for some time. However (不过) it is not necessary (必要的) to shake hands.

    3) Use the person's Name.

It is always good form to use the name of the person you are greeting. You might say, "Good Morning, Mr. Mischief" or " Hello, Franklin" . A person's surname (姓) should be used unless (除非) he is good friend or school-mate (校友).
