Dialogue14
Jim is having lunch at Li Ming's home.
Li Ming: Jim, have noodles, please. Can you use chopsticks?
Jim: Oh, yes, I can. But I can't use chopsticks very proficiently.
Li Ming: Do Americans usually use chopsticks when you eat something?
Jim: No, we don't. American eating is funny. We eat almost everything with a fork and a knife.
Li Ming: Should I hold knife in my right hand all the time when eating?
Jim: No, holding a knife in one's right hand longer than a few seconds is considered to be bad manners. If it is necessary to use a knife, people take the fork in their left hand, and cut off a piece of meat. Then they put the knife down, transfer the fork to their right hand, and put the food to their mouth. This is ridiculous ( 滑稽可笑 ), but it is considered good manners.
Li Ming: Oh, that sounds very difficult.
