第 24 届奥运会 1988 年 9 月 17 日 在韩国的汉城举行。汉城是继东京之后第二个主办奥运会的亚洲城市。第 24 届奥运会的开幕形式于 9 月 17 日 10 时 30 分 在可容纳 10 万观众的蚕室奥林匹克体育场举行。韩国总统卢泰遇和国际奥委会主席 J.A. 萨马兰奇出席了大会。汉城奥运会组委会委员长朴世植致开幕词，国际奥委会主席萨马兰奇致欢迎词。本届奥林匹克圣火于 8 月 23 日 在奥林匹亚引燃， 8 月 25 日 由韩国专机从雅典运抵济洲岛，途经釜山、大丘、仁川等 29 个城镇的火炬接力，历时 22 天，行程 4186 公里 。曾获第 11 届奥运会马拉松冠军的 76 岁的孙基祯手持火炬进入会场，由第 10 届亚运会 3 枚金牌获得者林春爱接过火炬绕场一周，由象征体育、科技和艺术的二男一女接过火炬点燃奥林匹克火焰。
