Earth Day

   On the urging of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in the early 1960's, Earth Day bloomed into a grassroots movement that eventually culminated in the first official U.S. observance celebrated in 1970. "That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day," said Nelson. "It organized itself.” Today, April 22 is the day when millions around the world celebrate Earth Day, which has grown to encompass events taking place throughout April, also known as Earth Month.
