    British Etiquette

The British used to be famous for having very formal behaviour with each other. Women wouldn't speak to people they hadn't been introduced to and all behaviour in public was carefully controlled. However, since World War II things have slowly changed. This is partly due to the influence of more relaxed American manners and the social revolutions of the 1960s and 1970s, which have seen women gain greater equality with men. Most men don't automatically open doors for women nowadays, and most women don't expect them to. Social kissing on meeting is more frequent than it was between men and women, and women and women. This is often, however, "air-kissing" where perhaps just the cheeks are brushed, rather than being an actual kiss. It is less acceptable for men to be physical with each other, however; male friends can hug and show their affection when they meet each other.
