Where are you going? Manypni?
It's Manyoni's favorite time of day. Quictly, she slips on her dress.her baby brother sleeps on. Outsede she splashes cold on her face. Her mother spoons up hot porridge for breakfast. The sky is fire-red, but a cool breeze rustles the leaves of the great gray baobab trees as Manyoni sets off down the path. She crosses the ridge above the dry Limpopo riverbed. In the forest, there are many tall trees. Under the tall wild fig( 无花果 ) trees, a bushpig (南非野猪) still forages (草料) in the early morning light.
Manyoni Passes the malala palms. Ragh-gha! Bark (叫) the baboons( 狒狒 ) in fright (吃惊的) . Ragh-gha! Ragh-gha! Yimp-trrrrr…Yimp-trrrrr…! The calls of the woodland( 林地 ) kingfishers (翠鸟) tremble (用颤动的声音叫) through the air as Manyoni crosses the fever tree pan (丛林) and enters the shady( 阴暗的 ) kloof (峡谷) where the shy impala feed.Manyoni skips past the red sandstone( 沙岩 ) koppies (小山) … and scrambles( 爬 ) over the krantz (悬崖) above Tobwani Dam.Now the sun is high and white. Manyoni's shadow dances past the mopani scrub( 灌木 ) and acacia trees (阿拉伯树) …and over the hot, dry plains( 草原 ).
“Manyoni, Manyoni!” A small voive rings out over the veld( 草原 ). “Manyoni, Tula,” Manyoni greets her friend.
The two little girls hurry down the road together. A tractor rumbers by as Manyoni and Tula reach the village. They're almost there now. the girls begin to run.
They stop at the door and smooth down their skirts, catching their breaths. “Good morning, Mrs. Dube,” they say shyly. Mrs. Dube glances at her watch and smiles. “Twenty minutes,” she tell them. “Heh!” The girls clap their hands together and run out to the school yard. They love having time to play their friends before class begins.
