Christmas dinner

If there's one day a year you simply can't diet, it's Christmas Day. Golden roast potatoes, succulent braised turkey, moist herb stuffing, mince pies, sherry, stilton, chocolate –just thinking about it makes your mouth water.

Although there are lots of choices, turkey is still the favourite centrepiece of any Christmas dinner. Before that, wealthy families feasted on swan, boar and even peacock.

Aside from the turkey, a traditional Christmas dinner includes brussels sprouts, roast potatoes – or ‘roasties' as we often call them, cranberry sauce, rich nutty stuffing, tiny sausages wrapped in bacon and lashings of hot gravy. Christmas Crackers are also a must. For dessert there's always a rich, fruity pudding which you douse in flaming brandy – said to ward off evil spirits.

There's no rule about what time you all sit down for your Christmas dinner – some have it for lunch, others for dinner – and some lucky merrymakers even have it for both! Whatever time you choose, it's always a joyous, lavish affair that can go on for hours and hours.
