When the first shock occurs, take cover under a steady table or desk.  Stay away from heavy cabinets and bookshelves, which may fall over.  Stay away from windows and glass items.

Do not go outside unless absolutely necessary.

Do not immediately rush outside.  Never jump from a window or roof in an attempt to escape.

Remain calm and watch for fire.  Turn off the gas supply and heating devices at the main.

When the shaking stops, do not immediately rush outside. Stay calm and only move around after you have confirmed everything is safe.
