Annie: Tell me about the old days, Grandpa. I love hearing about them.

Grandpa: When I was a child, I lived in a small village in countryside. The life is very different from present.

Annie: Who did you live with?

Grandpa: My father and mother and my brothers and sisters.

Annie: Did you work on a farm?

Grandpa: Oh, yes, we weren’t very rich. Life was much harder.

Annie: Where did you study?

Grandpa: Sometimes I studied at the village school. But I didn’t study very much. When the farm was busy, I helped my father.

Annie: You can’t go to school everyday like us. Right?

Grandpa: Yes. We had to help family.

Annie: Why did you come to Guangzhou?

Grandpa: Well, I wanted to see the world. Our village was very small. Nothing changed there. Guangzhou wasn’t as big as it is now, but it was a city.

Annie: How did you travel here? Did you take a bus?

Grandpa: No, I didn’t. I was very poor. I walked from the village to here. I walked for two weeks. When I reached here, I was very thin—much thinner than I am now!
